Jay was born in India in 1959, and arrived in Botswana in 1984. He is a naturalised citizen of Botswana, identity number: 300410225.
Jay serves as Chairman, after successfully leading the firm in his capacity as Managing Partner from 2000 to 2018. He joined the firm in 1984 and became a Partner in 1985, working in all divisions of the firm. He played a lead role in forging an international affiliation for this locally established firm. The firm was started under the name of Acumen in 1976 and became the Botswana member firm of Grant Thornton International in 1992. Jay is a key player in making Grant Thornton the second largest professional services firm in Botswana.
He is a member of the Policy Board of Grant Thornton in Botswana.
Jay has been with the firm for 34 years. He has successfully nurtured his clients in their growth process with his knowledge of the country and professional expertise.
Jay was responsible for starting the audit practice of the firm in 1988 and was the firm’s audit partner until 2003. He then handed over this portfolio to the newly appointed audit partner and continued with his role as the client contact partner for the firm’s major clients.
Jay advises clients on setting up new business establishments in the country. His passion for Corporate Finance work has kept him closely associated with assisting clients in raising equity and loan funds from the market and financial institutions.
His close involvement with businesses in Botswana has enabled Jay to provide advice on corporate structuring and amalgamations.
Professional qualifications and memberships
Jay graduated from the University of Madras, India with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1979 and thereafter qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1983.
Regional Head of Africa – Network Capability Team - representing Grant Thornton International for strengthening the presence of Grant Thornton in the African region. This responsibility takes him to many countries in Africa providing exposure to doing business in those countries. Grant Thornton is now present in 24 countries in Africa.
Co-founder & Chairman of the Board of Directors of Botho University, the leading private university in Botswana. He is also the chairman of the audit committee.
Chairman of the Government Audit committee convened by the Minister of Finance & Development Planning under the Public Finance Management Act of the Government of Botswana.
Elected member of the Board of Governors of Grant Thornton International –2007 to 2008 – Elected as a representative of Africa, Middle East and Europe. While on the International Board, also served on the Budget sub-committee and Interim Governance committee of the Board of Governors of Grant Thornton International.
Past Chairman (Co-ordinator) of Business Botswana committee for the Trade and Industry sector of the High Level Consultative Council (HLCC) chaired by the Minister of Trade and Industry. HLCC is the liaison between private sector and government. As the chairman, Jay was a member of the main HLCC meeting chaired by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Botswana held twice annually.
Elected President of the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) for a period of 2 years – May 2002 to April 2004. Prior to that, Jay was chosen to serve as Vice-President of BICA. He served as a member of the BICA governing council for many years prior to that. Jay has also been a member and has chaired the various committees of BICA i.e. Technical, Education and training, Taxation, Disciplinary and also held the position of Treasurer for one year.
Served as the representative of Botswana Institute of Accountants (BICA) on the consultative committee of Registrar of Companies for drafting the Regulations for the new Companies Act, and served as the leader of the consultative committee formed by BICA to assist in the drafting of a Corporate Governance code for Botswana.
Jay has been a member of the Private Business Growth Awards committee since 2015, and chaired it during its year of inception. Presented in association with Business Botswana and Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC), this initiative is Grant Thornton’s biggest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity that encourages and honours the development of growing private businesses in the country.
Jay is also involved in various other CSR activities of Grant Thornton in Botswana, the latest being Tshwaragano Primary School adopted in line with the “Adopt a school” program.
In his personal capacity, Jay has been a member and also served as a President in various social organisations involved in charitable activities for the welfare of the local community. He is an active participant in fund raising projects for charity.
Presentations and publications
Jay has been a member of Grant Thornton’s corporate Toastmasters club since 2014, which has facilitated development of communication and leadership skills. He served as President of the club in 2014/15 and Immediate Past President in 2015/16. He has achieved “Competent Communicator” and “Competent Leader” status.
Jay has actively been involved within and outside of the firm since 1984 in the training of Batswana in the field of accountancy and business studies. He has constantly strived for the development of the accounting profession in the country through his roles of teaching to part-time University students and by being an active member in the development and growth of the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants.
